Join host Robert Forto as he welcomes junior musher, Lara Renner to Mushing Radio.
My name is Lara Renner and I have been running dogs for 5 years. We currently have a kennel of 14 Siberian Huskies, 13 of which are named after Star Wars characters (Storm, Jedi, Captain, Kylo Ren, Hera, Rebel, Solo, Artoo, Leia, Luke, Blaster, Chewie, and Max Rebo) For the first 3 years, my team and I have competed in races 30 miles or less throughout New England. I have competed in the Can-Am 30 twice, placing 4th both times. With my goal of running Iditarod and the Yukon Quest, in 2015 my team and I competed in the Can-Am 100, placing 5th as the top Siberian team, top rookie driver, top female driver, and youngest ever to compete at 14 years old. This season, my dad and I made the 5,000 mile drive from New Hampshire to Alaska to compete in the Willow 100 and Jr. Iditarod.
On this episode we discuss:
- What it is like to prepare to run the Junior Iditarod
- How does someone prepare to drive from New Hampshire to Alaska with a dog team
- About her dogs and why they are named after Star Wars characters
