Dog Works Radio is a popular podcast hosted by Robert and Michele Forto, seasoned dog trainers with a deep passion for all things canine. Dog Works Radio provides a valuable resource for dog owners and enthusiasts looking to deepen their understanding and connection with their K9 Buddy.
We started our podcast in January 2009. It was pretty early in the podcast space and we wanted a way to share our client’s stories, training struggles and successes. As a husband and wife team, Robert and Michele Forto, started by setting up a couple of microphones in the lobby of our dog training center on Saturday afternoon after our group classes.
We had our clients jump on the microphone and ask their questions. Like, “Why does my dog jump on grandma when she comes to visit?” The show was incredibly slow to take off.
We had no idea what we were doing and tried to learn as much as we could along the way. We eventually moved up to Alaska for Robert to chase his crazy Iditarod dream and we brought the podcast along and started hosting our sister show, Mushing Radio as a simulcast on a local community radio channel. We saw some growth, especially during our daily Iditarod coverage each March but by podcast standards, nobody was listening to us.
So in 2017 Robert attended his first Podcast Movement in Anaheim, California and that changed his life and the direction of the show. He came back with a notebook full of ideas he and Michele got to work. Over the next few years they would attend Podcast Movement every year, and other smaller events with the intention of making at least one big change when they got back home.
It worked! It took nine long years for the podcast to reach its first MILLION downloads and after that it remained steady.
Today you could fill a sports stadium with the number of people that listen to our podcast each week. We have grown Dog Works Radio beyond ourselves, with new business ventures including the purchase of Mushing Magazine and we continue to learn things every day to make this a little better than before.
