November isEpilepsy Awareness Month, and as part of my continuing FiveSibes #LiveGibStrong K-9 Epilepsy Awareness & Education Campaign, we are talking Canine Epilepsy and how it does not stop dogs from doing the things dogs love to do from playing Fetch to mushing, skijoring, bikejoring, hiking, showing, agility, and snoozing on the couch with their beloved humans!
Today’s guest is known as the “Husky Lady,” Ann Calano, president of the Arizona Siberian Husky Rescue & Adoption since 2005, vice-president of the Treasured K9s Jindo rescue based in New Jersey, Siberian Husky foster parent, trainer, and hu-mom to beautiful “Ruby” her adopted Siberian Husky that is an Epi-dog (dog with Epilepsy) ~AND~ an agility champ! “Seizures are not going to stop her doing what she loves to do!” states Ann.
Ann has also fostered a Korean Jindo that was misidentified as a white Husky, and went on to become vice-president of Treasured K9s. She says her true love of rescue lies in fostering and training dogs that need a new start in life. “I became a non-stop foster person, started working closely with the shelters and local trainers and learned to think like a dog,” which we talk about how to do in this episode!
It was during the 2007-2008 year that Ann started an agility class with one of her dogs. “Although I didn’t know it at the time, it was the key to understanding the value of giving a working dog a job to do.” She currently has three agility-trained Siberians, who she says have taught her how much these dogs love to learn. Her Epi-dog, “Ruby,” joined her first agility class when she was eight months! Ruby is such an inspiration, as she does not let her Epilepsy stop her from doing what she loves—performing agility!
Thinking of adopting a dog with Canine Epilepsy? Please do! And tune in to this informative episode to learn some of Ann’s tips on doing so, plus so much more!
